Most people tie their output to their time. It’s the reason we blame time when we fall short. Think about your own life for a moment. How often have you said lack of time is the reason you’re behind on your to-do list, not present for the people you care about or procrastinating over bigger projects and goals?
To get back on track, we work later, push tasks off or convince ourselves things will improve in the future. The reason we leverage time is because it’s tangible. It’s logical that time is linked to output because time can be tracked and measured.
However, this strategy doesn’t work because there is always more to do, more to explore and more people to satisfy. No matter how much you do, more is always waiting in the wings.
So, if more time isn’t the solution to a successful and fulfilling life, what is?
The answer is your energy — a force with an exponential impact on your achievements and the life you create. You can create exponential outcomes by leveraging energy, not time. Time is relative — it’s not fixed in the way we think. It’s why one hour can pass in a heartbeat, and the next can drag on for days. When it comes to exponential outcomes, it’s not the amount of time you invest that matters.
What counts is the energy you bring to the task or experience.
Energy is a measure of your vibrancy and vitality — a holistic mix of mental clarity, physical alertness and emotional drive. Your energy impacts your ability to show up and do the “work” without getting distracted or side-tracked.
The state of your energy is the reason you can be hyper-productive one day, then struggle to make any meaningful progress the next day. It’s why 30 minutes of fully present time with your partner fills them up more than a whole day spent with a distracted or lethargic version of you.
Energy explains why some people can collapse time and quantum leap through life. It’s how some people create a disproportionate uplift in their sales, explode their wealth or transform a relationship in a timescale that doesn’t make sense.
You don’t need more time to create the impact you want — you need more energy — which is a lever under your control entirely. You can elevate your energy with the help of these three intentionality practices.
Prime your energy with a morning routine.
Most people squander energy from the get-go by jumping straight into emails or social media. If your first act of the day involves scrolling on your phone, you’re wide open to other people’s agendas and priorities instead of your own.
Keep the first hour of the day just for you. Use this space to elevate your energy with a routine that nurtures your mind, body, and soul. You can journal, meditate, read positive literature, exercise or focus on deep breathing exercises.
I coach a lot of people who tell me they don’t have time for a morning ritual. I ask them to imagine they’re a Tesla. Regardless of its brilliant design, if a Tesla battery is flat, it won’t deliver peak performance. The same principle applies to you as a human being.
Intentionally stay in your zone of genius.
Our society loves to spread the message that you can do anything you want, but that doesn’t mean you should. There are some things you’re naturally good at that also boost your energy when you do them. The more you focus your energy in your zone of genius, the better your business and life become.
In practice, this means becoming a better delegator and building your team. Eliminate tasks that drain your energy and offload them to a virtual assistant or someone else from your team and watch your outputs grow exponentially.
Switch on elevated emotions with a gratitude practice.
The way you feel either elevates or drains your energy. Life is challenging. Stuff will go wrong, conflict happens and some results will disappoint. You can stay in your own energy by implementing checks that protect yourself from the downward spiral of negativity that’s often in our periphery.
Zig Ziglar said, “Gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions” — a statement supported by science. Studies have found that expressing gratitude makes the brain release dopamine and serotonin, two of the neurotransmitters responsible for happiness. There’s always something to appreciate, even during tough times. Prime yourself to feel good regardless, and you’ll always be ready to bring your energy to the experiences that matter.
Time isn’t the key differentiator for a successful life.
We all have the same 24 hours in a day. If time were the deciding factor for a life well-lived, we’d all have more of what we want. But that’s not how life works.
Exponential outcomes in your business, health and relationships are dependent on your energy, not time. In the words of one of my teachers, neuroscientist Dr. Joe Dispenza, “Life is about the management of energy. Where you place your attention, is where you place your energy.”
Make it your focus to get intentional with your energy with the help of the three techniques outlined above and your life will likely take a quantum leap as a result.
