Clubhouse launched in April 2020 as a novel social networking app based on audio-only conversation. The app hit at the perfect moment as the pandemic limited face-to-face interaction and left the world hungry for more connection. Since then, Clubhouse has taken the world by storm with more than 10 million weekly active users today.
Coming from a background in radio, I’m all aboard the Clubhouse train. It’s like a modern version of talk radio where listeners can call in (known as “raising your hand” on the app) to share thoughts, advice, challenges, etc. It provides the deeper sense of connection that everyone seems to be looking for right now.
Entrepreneurs, in particular, have a lot to gain from the app while it’s still fresh but not yet completely saturated with users. You can learn and expand your influence by connecting with other business leaders and entrepreneurs on Clubhouse. If you’re looking to get on board, the time is now. The following strategies can help you foster authentic connections and uncover valuable networking opportunities:
1. Optimize your profile
Before you start joining and hosting rooms, make sure your profile gives viewers a clear description of your expertise and the opportunity to connect with you further. If people find what you have to say interesting, they’re likely to visit your profile to learn more.
This is your chance to lay the groundwork for making connections that extend beyond the app. You can connect your Twitter and Instagram profiles in your bio to give readers a quick way to connect. You can include additional URLs, but they won’t be active links, so make sure they’re easy to remember so users can open a new window and type them into the search bar.
“It is de rigueur on Clubhouse to tap people’s icon to read their profile,” said Jeff Sass, CMO and co-founder of .CLUB Domains, LLC. “Even if you are in a room passively listening, there are people tapping your image and checking out who you are and what you represent. Choose the content of your profile with intention.”
2. Build communities around your expertise
Create rooms on topics about which you are passionate, schedule them regularly so listeners can know exactly when to join each week, and title each room something clear, specific, and interest-piquing: “Local SEO Tips for San Francisco Small Businesses,” for example.
Make sure the conversations you host within those rooms are valuable and engaging. Don’t push products and services—people don’t log on to Clubhouse to buy things. They go there to learn and engage with others about topics that interest them. Offer advice or open the floor for input in a way that will give listeners something of true value to walk away with.
For example, Michael Swartz, president of Health Karma, has been on Clubhouse for a couple of months working to connect people from all walks of life around the topic of healthcare.
“The most exciting thing for me is that I see an incredible opportunity to build an engaged community of people trying to push the understanding of healthcare forward by telling their own stories,” Swartz said.
3. Engage other entrepreneurs
A big part of uncovering the value of Clubhouse is being an active participant yourself. You can’t just open rooms and expect people to flock to them automatically. First, you must do your fair share of engaging with others on the platform to build up your own engagement.
You can set the groundwork for successful business networking by joining rooms around topics you know are prominent in the entrepreneurial world. Contribute to those conversations by raising your hand, getting on stage, and sharing your valuable input. Other entrepreneurs and business leaders who like what you have to say can check your profile, add your scheduled rooms to their calendars, and maybe even reach out to you through the URLs in your profile to collaborate further.
4. Gather feedback on your ideas
Clubhouse is an excellent place for entrepreneurs to gather authentic, valuable feedback. Most people on Clubhouse won’t know you in person, so they likely won’t hesitate to give you an honest read. You can create a room specifically for sharing business ideas and gathering feedback, then share your ideas, ask other people to share their ideas, and then gather feedback around them. This could give you and the other participants in your room a good take on whether their idea is a miss or the next big thing. It’s all about creating an open, collaborative space to foster a sense of support and to build an engaged community.

Engage with others authentically, provide an avenue for further connection, and foster a sense of true community in your rooms to use the Clubhouse app to its fullest potential to expand your influence and make new connections.
