McLaren has long been a name associated with speed and performance, but their latest car suggests a new attribute should be added to the brand’s identity: sustainability. The 2022 McLaren Artura is the British marque’s first plug-in hybrid, but don’t think for a second that signifies a drop in performance.
The McLaren Artura is powered by a brand new twin-turbo 3.0 L V6 engine that’s paired with an E-motor and energy-dense battery pack. Total power output is 671 hp and 531 lb-ft of torque, which helps the Artura sprint to 60 mph in 3 seconds flat while maxing out at an electronically-limited top speed of 205 mph. Aiding the car’s speed is its lightness — it boasts a class-leading power-to-weight ratio of 481 hp/ton. That’s largely due to the Artura being the first McLaren to be built on the company’s new McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA), which has been developed in-house to optimize high-performance hybrid powertrains. The McLaren Artura is also, unsurprisingly, the most fuel-efficient McLaren ever — with a gas mileage rating of over 50 mpg. So, you know, it’s actually pretty practical… for a supercar.
