Earlier this year, Renault announced plans for a revival of its iconic 80s hatchback, the 5. As exciting as it was divisive, the news sent auto enthusiasts everywhere into a frenzy on account of the fact that it would come in the form of an EV — of all things.
Thankfully, however, the team at Legende Automobiles has just finished up a vehicle that properly pays tribute to the petrol-powered Group B racer of old. Dubbed the ‘R5 Turbo 3,’ it’s essentially a retromod that combines the best of the Turbo 1 and Turbo 2 along with some more modern technology and materials. In practice, this means that the Derosier-designed, hand-built body is made almost entirely from carbon fiber, with some widened wheel arches in order to fit larger rubber. What’s more, it’s been fitted with a slew of state-of-the-art electrical components inside and out, such as a digital instrument display, a set of retro LEDs front and rear, as well as a dual-zone climate control system. Powered by a 400hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine, it’s made only better by the manual shifter, full roll cage, and bucket seats. Legende has yet to reveal cost or build quantities, though we expect it to be a pretty pricey vehicle.
