For some parents, it’s been a surprise to see how well their kids have adapted to change this year. For Elisa in Pennsylvania, it was a relief to see a sense of calm wash over her daughter, despite the sudden changes in her routine. In this episode of From Our Family to Yours, our experts provide insight into different reactions kids are having to this new change of pace.

00:00
are you surprised at how easily your
00:02
child has adapted to change
00:04
we may have some reasons why welcome to
00:08
from our family to yours hi
00:11
i’m jonathan jovich from the understood
00:13
team i’m an art teacher
00:15
and a parent and today’s story is about
00:18
and comes from elisa in pennsylvania she
00:23
my daughter maya has demonstrated
00:25
remarkable patience and resiliency
00:29
many of us were overwhelmed with the
00:30
changes however maya surprised me with
00:35
when you have a child with hidden
00:36
disabilities childhood apraxia of speech
00:40
the world doesn’t see their challenges
00:42
and what they’re coping with
00:44
one of those challenges is the constant
00:46
run around to therapy and tutoring
00:49
for the first time in a long time we had
00:53
we didn’t have to attend tutoring
00:54
sessions in speech and language therapy
00:58
in person maya was at home and
01:01
and completed her virtual lessons
01:05
the rush of our daily routine was
01:07
eliminated and i noticed a new calm take
01:11
she had more time to do the things she
01:16
what’s amazing about elise’s story with
01:19
is that she took the chance and the
01:22
to step back from her own emotions and
01:26
she noticed this sense of calm come over
01:29
because of the fact that she could be at
01:33
that she felt comfortable maybe making
01:35
things a little bit slower
01:37
a little bit easier to handle because
01:39
they’re spending more time at home
01:41
in addition it’s exciting to see the
01:44
possibilities moving forward
01:46
if our kids are learning best through
01:49
and through therapy sessions at home in
01:50
a space where they feel comfortable
01:52
continuing to advocate for those
01:56
is really important for us alisa
02:01
at nine years old she has the ability to
02:05
keeping herself busy through her
02:06
favorite activities such as basketball
02:10
the biggest surprise is that she’s
02:11
continuing to learn and make progress
02:14
she realized early on that she would not
02:16
be seeing her friends in a normal
02:18
so we had to come up with ways to stay
02:21
letter writing was one lesson that i was
02:23
able to incorporate into her learning
02:26
she was able to make a different
02:27
connection with her friends that she
02:29
wasn’t able to in the past
02:31
during the pandemic our structure was
02:35
maya has handled the changes with grace
02:38
and demonstrated patience
02:39
i didn’t think was possible for a child
02:44
i’ve heard this from many parents and i
02:48
i was concerned about the social
02:50
situations or the connections that my
02:52
child was going to be missing
02:53
much like alisa is for maya and yet it’s
02:58
to learn new things to build new
03:02
and that’s what’s happening here she
03:04
taught her daughter how to write
03:05
letters and i know that that’s something
03:07
that we’ve done in our family as well
03:10
my kids have learned about sentence
03:13
about the structure of a letter about
03:16
about the envelope where the stamp even
03:18
goes these are things that we haven’t
03:22
because we’ve just sent emails or text
03:24
messages or done facetime
03:26
but instead we’re learning a new skill
03:30
and we send those letters off to family
03:32
and friends we can’t see
03:34
or walk through the neighborhood leaving
03:35
them for friends on their steps
03:37
as we wave through the windows at them
03:40
the other exciting thing is we’re
03:42
getting an opportunity to see our kids
03:44
interact with students and friends in
03:48
as many of our kids are learning at home
03:50
through distance learning
03:51
i think it’s important that whenever we
03:55
interacting in a positive way with a
03:57
peer that we take a moment to celebrate
04:00
them and to say you did a wonderful job
04:03
when you took a step back and listened
04:05
or it was great that you complimented
04:08
whenever they did this so taking the
04:11
opportunity to celebrate with our kids
04:13
in the big and in the small ways
04:17
if you have a story about your child
04:20

04:41
